Frequently Asked Questions
How much is sales tax in British Columbia?
BC charges 5% federal GST plus 7% provincial sales tax (PST), 12% in total on most goods. Some items carry a higher PST rate, such as certain vehicles and alcohol, so use this calculator for the standard rate.
Is BC PST the same as HST?
No. BC has two separate taxes: GST collected for the CRA and PST collected for the BC government. PST paid by a business cannot be claimed back as an input tax credit, unlike HST.
What is exempt from PST in BC?
Many basic items are exempt, including most groceries, children's clothing and footwear, books, prescription drugs and many services. Check gov.bc.ca for the full list before charging or paying tax.
When must I register for GST?
Once your total taxable sales pass $30,000 in a single calendar quarter or four consecutive calendar quarters you must register for GST. PST registration is separate and handled by the BC government.
