Frequently Asked Questions
How is BC income tax calculated?
BC uses seven progressive brackets from 5.6% to 20.5%. The lowest rate rose from 5.06% to 5.60% in 2026, and basic credits are worth the same rate. Low-income earners also get the BC tax reduction credit (up to $690). BC has no provincial surtax and no health premium: MSP premiums ended in 2020.
What is the CPP contribution for 2026?
Employees pay 5.95% on earnings between $3,500 and $74,600 (YMPE), plus 4% on earnings between $74,600 and $85,000 (CPP2). Self-employed pay double (both employee + employer shares).
Does BC have a health premium?
No. BC eliminated Medical Services Plan (MSP) premiums on January 1, 2020. Employers with large payrolls pay the Employer Health Tax instead; employees do not.
Do I pay EI if I am self-employed?
Generally no — self-employed individuals in BC are not required to pay EI premiums, unless they opt in voluntarily for access to special EI benefits.
