Frequently Asked Questions

Who must pay CRA tax instalments?

You must pay quarterly instalments if your net tax owing (after withholding) exceeds $3,000 in both the current year and either of the two previous years (the calculator compares with the prior year you enter; also check the year before). The CRA instalment due dates are March 15, June 15, September 15 and December 15, moved to the next business day when they fall on a weekend (March 16 in 2026). This affects self-employed, rental income earners, and investors.

What happens if I miss an instalment?

The CRA charges interest at the prescribed rate (approximately the CRA prescribed interest rate, which is reset every quarter in 2026) compounded daily on any instalment arrears. You may also face an instalment penalty if your late payments are significant.
